about

This song came to me after one of our producers, Austin Taylor, shared this track with me when I saw him in Long Beach. The whole beat spoke to me as a reunion. I wrote the chorus and my verse for the track almost a year before we ever recorded it for the North West Spiritual Activist Summit in Portland which had the theme. We wanted the song to echo the themes of church, healing, and rebirth. We knew from the start we wanted Alex Cook on this track as a sort of sequel to "Angels are Everywhere" from the first album. It would focus on some of the same themes: redemption, striving, and seeing with new eyes. We never got to perform this song at the Northwest Summit and the beat sat on the shelf for a long time. When we came together in Boston for the first recording session the summer of 2011 it came out and we were able to record just my verse and the chorus. The first chorus had the lines, "travel the journey of faith with all the grace that I can give."
Over time, as I read more and more of the Bible, especially really studying the New Testament, I had a huge revelation about the theme of grace and what God has given us rather than what we earn. This led to changing the lyrics on another track, "Train." My verse tries to paint the beauty of the Church Universal: A Church without walls, a church without boundaries, a church without prejudice or stereotyping. I thought about the amazing gifts and talents I've seen from so many people I've met in my life, and how the seeming difficulty in bringing them together is washed away when the motive is to uplift the world with pure goodness. The final line of that verse, "Get out there and love, love, love, love" comes from a statement made by Mary Baker Eddy which she responded to the question about what the core of Christian Science is: "Love, love, love."

The chorus is a reminder that we've still got a lot of work to do. We've come a long, long way, but we still need to shake all these labels and support one another in our spiritual journeys. And no matter who we are we're being guided and loved by the Almighty. So no more sleeping in! We took this small sample from a John Legend and the Roots song called "Wake up Everybody!" which covers Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "Wake up Everybody." We performed "Wake Up!" with slightly altered lyrics at the Southern California Church Alive Summit in January 2011 to an audience of over 2000 people which was a really special expression of this song's message.

lyrics

John 14:16
Science and Health, 535: 17-18
Miscellaneous Writings, 355-359

There have been times in my life when I really couldn’t do right.
I felt crushed by the weight of a stone whose towering weight and height
would ruin a Goliath, and there was no way to deny it.
In the depths of this struggle needing so much love and can't supply it.

That was back in the days before I really knew there was a God.
In fact, I would rather have gone before a big bad firing squad
than to think those same old thoughts through which my poor mind would plod.
I thought I was a dead man, made up of nothing but dirt and sod

But through that burning fire I learned that the Lord is my rod and my staff,
and the beauty of his thoughts is where this whole thing is really at.
I began to think to myself, maybe me and the Almighty need to have a little chat.
And he told me, "With my love there is no tit for tat –
In fact, it's nothing but my love from beginning to end
And at the bottom of it all you find that I Am your best friend
I go with you every day like a husband or a wife
But I love you more – I Am your life.”

I want to know what The Way is.
Travel the journey of faith with
all the grace that I’ve been given
because I'm made alive in Your Love.

Truth isn't made here with hatred.
To care is staying wide awake when
humankind is sleeping in.

I feel alive in Your Love.

English:
Head low,
and hands up.
Trying to find the answers.
Asking God, what's happening in the Mother land?
The war is hitting, kids are dying, mothers are crying, and terror is knocking
And all our fathers have left to pray for is to find the way.

Yes the way to save their families from all the terror
Yes the way to assure their kids a better life
But what they’re forgetting is, that way could simply be found inside their prayers
And if they change their ways of thinking about things everything will be clear

let’s all be conscious of the fact that the way we think influences us
and switching our thoughts from negative to positive in the middle of an issue is very important
so let's be alert, let’s not get caught up, let's not accept all mortal thought

it's true that it's hard to control ourselves when we're in the moment
but with practice, and persistence it'll slowly come
so my brother do like me, try to switch your way
see things in the positive way
advice from Salomon.

I want to know what The Way is.
Travel the journey of faith with
all the grace that I’ve been given
because I'm made alive in Your Love.

Truth isn't made here with hatred.
To care is staying wide awake when
humankind is sleeping in.

I feel alive in your love.

Not a building, a temple, an altar,
but a place where a son and a father
find a way to be with one another.
To trust leaning on healing forever.

Not where doctrine, and dogma, and creeds are,
but where life and where light and where peace are.
Universal, it's bringing together
every brother and every sister.

We've all got a mission,
all got a legend,
all got to listen
all got our preference.
Can't you hear we're all saying the same thing?
When you hear words are you really listening?

Let's love one another,
treat me in Truth.
Be with a family
see them same as you.
Lay down the weaponry,
let go of jealousy.
Get out there and Love, Love, Love!

Love, Love, Love!

You all want to know what The Way is.
Travel the journey of faith with
all the grace that you’ve been given
because you feel alive in His love.

Truth isn't made here with hatred.
To care is staying wide awake when
humankind is sleeping in.
