about

Like several of the tracks from the It's About Good crew, this one began as a humble, acoustic church solo. (Since then, it has morphed into an entirely new creature, all electronic and dance-y and such.) The topic of the service that week was "Mortals and Immortals". In thinking about those two views of man — as mortal or as immortal — this song is broken up into several contrasting parts. The first part of the song looks at life from the "mortals" perspective: life if lived from matter. Honestly, nobody wants this life. It is fruitless and short. Nothing born out of matter has any kind of lasting legacy. And when we live from this perspective, even our own thoughts and desires, which often seem like the most essential parts of us, wither away quickly.

Fortunately… this isn't what God made us to be. Thank. GOODNESS. We are made up of much diviner ingredients than matter. In fact, we are not "temporary vessels that are born and then die". It's immortal, divine Love that made us. It's immortal, divine Love that moves us and reveals the real purpose for our existence: to do good, only, and in the name of Love.

The rest of the song celebrates this.

Because this song has so many musically-distinct pieces, I like to think of it as the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of Christian Science music. The Cliff Notes version might read as follows: 1) Are we made of matter? 2) No, and here's why. 3) Sweet! Hey, look at all the ways divine Life uses me! God is so good! 4) Little by little… I'm getting it. Okay.

Finally, the chorus is quite important: it comes from a phrase found in Mary Baker Eddy's unpublished works (made available thanks to the Mary Baker Eddy Library in Boston). The phrase says: "I can is the son of I AM." (capitalization added by me.) I'm not going to try and tell you what that means… but I leave it with you to consider deeply.

lyrics

Exodus 3:14
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 252: 32-8

All I taste with my mouth
is here for a moment
then gone like the passing of tides.

All I think and want
is here for a moment
then gone like smoke.

All bodies are here
for a numbered days
then gone back into the ground.

So what are we to do?
Are we not this thing that dies?

Are we not this thing that dies?

No.

We're the expressions of Love, Truth and Life,
not temporary vessels that are born and then die.
Through healing the sick
we prove what is real,
and I've learned it's much more than taste, touch and feel.
Love, Truth and Life is the God that we know.
We're spiritually made from head to toe.
Matter is limits,
a warped way of seeing;
but everything is mental.
It's infinite being.

CHORUS
The son of I Am is I Can.
Life needs to be lived, so I’m living it
Amen!
The son of I Am is I Can.
Life needs to be lived!
The son of I Am is I Can.
Amen, amen, amen, amen.
The son of I Am is I Can.
Life needs to be lived, needs to be lived!

When we live for Life in every way
then divine Love becomes our forever stay.
We see there’s purpose, not just random cells,
everything’s an idea like the Secret of Kells.
There's a world of wonder waiting to be explored
outside of fear into harmony's chords
lives the new freedom of seeing your life
as the elegant song of Creation's most right!

CHORUS

I Can walk.
I Can run.
I Can pray.
I Can do everything.
Do it all for Life.

I Can dance.
I Can groove.
I Can freeze
I Can do everything.
Do it all for Life!

I Can talk.
(Only praise!)
Every thought.
(Only praise!)
Day by day.
(Only praise!)
That’s my way.
(Only praise!)
Do it good!
(Only praise!)
Do it all for Life!

Oh, my Lord.
Yes, my Life!
You made me!
Nice work!
You made life
Holy!
You made everything
Oh, so good!
Oh, oh yes my Life!

Here's the trick -
there's no change.
Here's the thing -
there’s no death.
Here's the fact -
all is Life.
in the great
I AM.

Slowly my mind is yielding to the bigger truth that I can.

The son of I Am is I Can.
