about

I heart the idea that we exist in a world not made by our own effort (2 Corinthians 5:1, Acts 7:48). All of our best — Shakespeare's poetry, Michelangelo's curves, Einstein's ideas — they're distant mimicry of actual reality. I honestly believe that the structure we exist in, our house, is consciousness. How could we exist elsewhere? The idea that my religion, Mind Science, brings out is that we're not pieces of matter that sprang from nothing, but purposeful, intelligence conceptions of an all-knowing Mind or God. To borrow from another song on this album, we are literally "thoughts made known."

I like the word elegant because for me it depicts where intelligence and beauty intersect. This song is just a flow of my personal feelings as I try to understand God as the convergence of Creation and Soul, as Elegant Mind. It not always easy to see my little life or big Life this way. But, the deeper I get pummeled by the beliefs of mortal existence, the more it makes me crazy when I don't see the awesomeness and realness of God's design, i.e. "Sapient or lazy, it all makes me crazy. It’s not just human actions — it’s about the Mind that made me."

The last line — as simple as it is — is deeply touching for me: "Christ's love lived is a house built right." I've had many experiences with this. Several years ago, after going through a trying and harrowing life-stage, I took a 20-day solo retreat on an island to clear my mind. For the first 10 days, I just read the New Testament. I read it from cover to cover, slowly and deliberately. For the next 10 days, I just prayed. I thought I would come out like Superman. But, as I kayaked home in rain, I burst into uncontrollable crying. That was until this thought came: "How could you be moved like this — your house (consciousness) must be build on reeds." Wow, the New Covenant that Jesus made with us finally came alive to me in that moment. I must build my life on the rock of Christ. I must build my life of the stability of the truths and assurances the Christ Jesus taught. Then, and only then, could I be perfectly stable and useful.

Now, I had another experience with this a few days ago. I was hiking down a mountain when I tripped and badly stubbed my toe. The first thought that hit me like a truck was: "You have a savior." The next thought was that my savior was the life of Jesus. Not the person Jesus, not some mystical power that he endued. But, the purity, the genuineness, the fortitude and perseverance, the goodness and love that he lived. I suddenly felt that my life was made up of the same stuff that his life was made of. I was made of the qualities of God. I suddenly felt outside my body and the pain instantly left me. I never looked or felt the effect of the injury again.

I love the Designer. The Life which made and makes us. To it alone be our thoughts and lives.

lyrics

Isaiah 36:6
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 143:26-31
Poems (by Mary Baker Eddy) 37:5-8

Elegant Mind, our lives outlined.
Resting in Christ is man and his kind.
Heartbreak and gloom, you’ve all come too soon,
but now is your end as my selfishness is through.

Life takes me up high.
Wed to Soul am I.

Sapient or lazy,
it all makes me crazy.
It’s not just human actions –
it’s about the Mind that made me.

So kiss my toes
oh the small things that God knows.
In every little space
is a window to God’s grace.

Gratitude and tears,
the Love which breaks my fears.
Principled design,
vitiating minds.
Eddy’s behest:
“Thou here and everywhere.” (Mary Baker Eddy, Poems 37:7)
We can’t leave Mind
or be outside of Her care.

This mortal life is a dream of dreams;
it’s a house of broken reeds.
Our life in Christ is our only light
and Christ’s love lived
is a house built right.

[Translation of French spoken word]
“Mind is the grand creator, and there can be no power
except that which is derived from Mind. If Mind was
first chronologically, is first potentially, and
must be first eternally, then give to Mind the
glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its
holy name.” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures 143:26-31)
